The Institute begins with a tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute conducted by Barry McNealy. Following the tour, participants will meet Bishop Calvin Woods who will take us on a “Walk of Remembrance” as the featured dinner speaker. Dinner will be at Bethel Baptist Church in Collegeville.

While in Birmingham, we will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Participants will work with scholars, Movement leaders, the project director, master teachers, and their peers. Activities include lectures, travel to historic sites, discussion groups, panel discussions, blogs, and curriculum development.

Week Two of the Institute will feature travel explorations, lectures, and discussions. To accommodate the activities of the field study, we will depart Birmingham at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2022.

While traveling, our motor coach will serve as our mobile classroom and will provide an opportunity to view vintage film footage in preparation for the sites we will visit. Dr. Bouyer, Ms. Belshe, and Ms. Fanning will employ site-based instructional strategies to build content knowledge as participants interpret the sites and related resources.

Participants will become “road scholars” as they, figuratively – by way of books, music, and video – and literally travel the highways of Alabama in search of truth, knowledge, and understanding. On our quest, we will meet scholars, local historians, and foot soldiers of the Movement who will share their knowledge and personal experiences.
